The full answer

Right now (2026), about 90% of NDIS plans are self-managed or plan-managed, meaning unregistered providers can be paid. NDIA-managed plans require a registered provider. The mandatory registration reform changes this in waves: SIL, SDA, behaviour support and platform providers face mandatory registration from July 2026; most other service types follow by July 2027. Sole-trader support workers are particularly affected — around 60,000 will need to register by 2027. The cheapest pathway is a Verification audit (around $1,500 to $3,000) for low-risk service types.
