Allied Health NDIS Billing Guide

Allied health practitioners delivering NDIS services need to navigate billing rules that differ from private practice. Wrong billing causes claim rejections, delayed payments, and audit findings. We've worked with allied health practices through Provider Scale to streamline NDIS billing. Here's the complete guide for OT, physio, speech path, exercise physiology and psychology.

NDIS Allied Health Rates 2026

Standard NDIS allied health rate is $193.99/hr in 2026 - same across most disciplines. Functional Capacity Assessments are paid at the same rate. The rate has held flat for several years pending NDIS Pricing Reform expected in 2027. Allied Health Assistants (cert IV trained, working under practitioner supervision) bill at lower rates around $86/hr - useful for delegating non-complex work. Travel time can be claimed at rates per the current Pricing Arrangements - check before invoicing as rules tightened in 2024.

The Three Plan Management Pathways

Allied health invoices flow three ways depending on participant's plan. Plan-managed (60% of plans): invoice the plan manager via PDF or integrated software. Paid in 7-14 days. Most allied health practices live here. Self-managed (30%): invoice participant directly, who claims through My Place portal. Paid in 5-10 days. NDIA-managed (10%): lodge through PRODA Provider Portal, requires registered-provider status. Paid in 1-3 business days. Most allied health practices serve plan-managed and self-managed participants - registration optional until July 2027 mandatory expansion.

Required Invoice Fields - Get Wrong

Get Rejected

Every NDIS allied health invoice must include: your ABN, NDIS support item code (different per discipline), service date, participant name, NDIS plan number, hours and rate, total amount, your payment details. Common mistakes: missing support item code, wrong code for the service delivered, missing plan number, rate above NDIS cap. From our work with allied health practices - 60% of claim rejections stem from these basic field errors. Use templated invoices in your practice management software (HotDoc, Cliniko, Halaxy all support NDIS templates).

Functional Capacity Assessments - The High-Value Service

Functional Capacity Assessments are paid at standard allied health rate but are typically larger billable items ($800-$2,000 per assessment). NDIA accepts FCAs from registered providers only for AT requests over $5,000 - so registration matters here. FCA workflow: assessment session (2-3 hours), documentation (3-5 hours), report writing (2-4 hours). Total billable time per FCA: 7-12 hours. High-margin service if you have efficient documentation templates. Build FCA templates once, reuse across participants. Saves 50% of report writing time.
