Self-managed participants
Self-managed participants control their own funding and pay providers directly. They have the most flexibility, can use any provider, and can even negotiate rates where it represents value for money. They decide quickly, which makes them a great target, but they also do their own research, so your website, reviews and responsiveness carry real weight.
How to attract them
- Be easy to find and evaluate online (strong website, Google reviews).
- Respond fast, they are often comparing a few providers at once.
- Make your specialties and availability obvious.
Plan-managed participants
Plan-managed participants use a registered plan manager to pay invoices and keep records. Plan management is funded separately by the NDIS at no cost to the participant, which is why it is the most popular option in 2026. Crucially, plan-managed participants can still use unregistered providers, so this is a large and open pool for growing providers.
How to attract them
- Build relationships with plan managers, who often suggest providers (see our guide on getting referrals from support coordinators and plan managers).
- Make invoicing clean and prompt, plan managers remember providers who are easy to work with.
- Keep availability visible.
NDIA-managed participants
